The Next Generation of Eco-Textiles: Innovation in Sustainable Fabric Design
Every designer knows that the right fabric can make or break a collection. But in today’s industry, that decision is no longer just about texture or color — it’s about environmental responsibility. Polyester has long been celebrated for being affordable, strong, and versatile, but it has also become one of the most environmentally damaging materials in modern fashion.
As the Joint Research Centre (2025) explains, “consumption of textiles has, on average, the fourth highest impact on the environment and climate change, after food, housing and mobility.” This puts designers in a challenging position. They must balance their creative vision with the growing demand for sustainable, ethical practices. To design for the future, we must first confront the cost of the fabrics that built the past.
